We've got another fun mushroom cultivation workshop in store for all you Festy Fungi-philes!  Come learn how to easily grow a variety of delicious gourmet mushrooms in your home, garden and backyard using low-cost/low-tech cultivation methods.  We will explore the lifecycle of fungi, and talk about the Fifth Kingdom's role in the environment as decomposers and soil-builders.  We'll also head out on a foray on Sunday to see what's fruiting this time of year in the Blue Ridge.  All workshop participants will receive a workshop zine and a GYO Mushroom Kit!  We look forward to seeing you there!

This workshop will provide a comprehensive primer for learning how to grow several varieties of gourmet and health-enhancing mushrooms using low-cost, low-tech methods in your home, garden and landscaping. Participants will learn through hands-on experience how to cultivate mushrooms in different growing mediums using common household items and agricultural byproducts. 

We will discuss the life-cycle and ecology of fungi, incorporating mushrooms for food, medicine and ecological restoration, and selecting suitable growing mediums for producing oyster, shiitake, lion's mane, reishi, etc. Everyone will also take home a GYO Mushroom Kit, The "Gnomegrown Zine", and enjoy a Gnomemade Feast full of gourmet Fungi and Fermented Flavas for lunch! ♥

Festy FUNgi 101 : Intro. to Growing Mushrooms
This workshop will provide a fun, immersive introduction to the fascinating 5th Kingdom - Fungi. We will explore easy, low-tech/low-input mushroom cultivation techniques that folks can easily employ in their home and garden. Participants will learn about the lifecycle and the ecology of fungi, and they will take away the knowledge and the hands-on experience associated with growing several species of delicious, gourmet mushrooms using common household items and agricultural byproducts. Topics will include propagating mushroom spawn, selecting suitable growing mediums, and integrating mushrooms into the landscape. Everyone will also take home a GYO Mushroom Kit!

Fifth Kingdom Gardening

Come join Gnomestead Hollow Farm and Forage for an awesome day of mushroom merriment and mycological musing as we explore the Fifth Kingdom in all of its garden glory! This workshop will provide an excellent primer for low-tech/low-input mushroom cultivation in the garden and in the greenhouse. Participants will learn about the lifecycle and the ecology of fungi, and they will take away the knowledge and the hands-on experience associated with growing several species of delicious, gourmet mushrooms using common, household waste items and agricultural byproducts containing lignin and cellulose. Topics will include propagating mushrooms in compost and in wood chips, growing mushrooms on suitable hardwoods and from kitchen waste, and selecting mushroom species for companion planting in the garden with your favorite spring, summer and fall veggies. We will also demonstrate and discuss how several species of fungi can rapidly build organic matter and increase soil fertility while additionally benefiting your plants in the greenhouse and in the garden beds.  

This workshop will include a GYO Mushroom Kit, "The Gnomegrown" zine on Mushroom Growing (featuring our myco-inspired gnomenclature), and an incredible gnomemade meal featuring some of the most flavorful ferments and savory mushrooms this side of the continental divide. We will also provide our own Japanese Red Reishi and make a super-satisfying mushroom tea to pump up that prana en la mañana!

Festy FUNgi 101: Mushroom Cultivation and Application  (fall 2015)

Get a little FUNgal in your Festy this year with our introductory mushroom cultivation playshop.  We will show you how you can grow your own mushrooms for food, medicine and ecological restoration! This workshop will provide a great in-depth introduction to growing delicious, nutrient-dense edible and medicinal mushrooms using common household waste items and agricultural byproducts.  You will learn how to easily incorporate mushroom growing into your home and into your garden.  We will also explore simple soil-building and mycofiltration strategies, using mushroom mycelium to create soil tilth and to help filter pathogenic bacteria and prevent toxic run-off from entering our watershed.

Workshop topics will include creating low-budget mushroom spawn, incorporating mushrooms into your garden, home and diet, and selecting species from the wild (and from the market) for easy, low-tech propagation.   In addition, we will discuss and demonstrate how to use mushrooms to build, beautiful healthy soil and increase nutrient availability for your plants.

 

You will be able to purchase GYO Mushroom kits and mushroom spawn at the end of the workshop.

New River Valley: Mushroom Cultivation Workshop (spring 2015)

Grow your own delicious mushrooms for food, fun and filtration! This workshop is an excellent introduction to growing gourmet and medicinal mushrooms using common household and agricultural waste products. Additionally, we will explore simple mycofiltration strategies, using mushroom mycelium to filter fecal-coliform bacteria and prevent toxic run-off from entering our watershed .

Create and take home your own GYO Mushroom Kit! You will learn how to cultivate a variety of delicious, ecologically beneficial mushroom species using simple growing methods. Workshop topics will include creating low-budget mushroom spawn, incorporating mushrooms into your landscape and diet, and selecting species from the wild (and from the market) for easy, low-tech propagation.  

Includes a Grow Your Own Gourmet Mushroom Kit, a scrumptious fungal feast- featuring all of our own wild and gnomegrown mushrooms, veggies, and ferments- and a Gnomegrown Zine!

Forage and Ferment: an Intro. to Wild Food Fermentation

This workshop will introduce participants to lactofermentation, giving everyone a comprehensive, hands-on experience making both classic and WILD variations of kraut and kimchi.  We will learn about and forage many of our bioregion's edible, nutrient-dense plants from which we make our own probiotic-rich vegetable ferments.  This introduction to fermentation will cover both the historical and cultural contexts in which Kimchi and Kraut emerged, and we will show you how your own seasonal farmed and foraged Blue Ridge bounty can make the very best living, cultured "krautchi" in this, here universe!

Home and Garden at Holly Lane Gardens

Join us at Holly Lane Gardens Farm and B&B on beautiful Bainbridge Island, WA for a introduction to growing mushrooms in both your home and garden.  From fungal exploration to cultivation, to feasting celebration, we will teach you how to Grow Your Own Mushrooms and incorporate them into your home, garden and dinner plate! We will cover mushroom spawn generation, propagation on agricultural byproducts and household waste, and integration into gardens and edible landscapes. Participants will receive their own GYO Mushroom Kits in addition to their own copy of our Gnomegrown Zine, an illustrated primer on simple, low-tech/low-cost mushroom cultivation.  We will sip Reishi Tea and chow down on a WILD Spore-to-Spork lunch at the end of the workshop.  Come join us Saturday, March 7th!
